1. The Ingredients are Found in Every Kitchen
Only few things require specific items such as borax that you can buy from jewelers or the internet, or castile soap (soap made from vegetable/olive oil) that you buy in specialty shops (or make at home).
Once you have the base ingredients and a few empty spray bottles you can prepare all the cleaning supplies you need for the house, laundry, car, yard, etc., in a few minutes and without too much tinkering. It’s not something difficult or that requires a large time investment.
2. Much, Much, Much Cheaper
3. Much Healthier for the User
If you read the back of the packaging of most detergents, you’ll see that it says must be used with gloves, or a recommendation to use with gloves.
How toxic something has to be to require the use of protective gear?
There are also many products that it’s clearly listed on them that you are not allowed to breathe them in; They are so toxic that even their fumes can cause damage – example: bleach that causes a burning sensation in the nose and throat and removes fat.
Also, most of these products are clearly listed as: “toxic,” “dangerous,” “keep out of reach of children,” “avoid eye contact,” etc. etc.
In fact, we bring toxic and dangerous substances into our homes and believe that “it’s going to be okay…”
4. Much Healthier for the Family
Many times, after you clean with the ‘mainstream’ detergents there is a residue that stays even after you wipe the surfaces with water. These residues come in contact with the family members.
You sit on the toilet with exposed skin and toxic substances can penetrate through the skin… Kids drop food on the floor and then pick it up and put it in their mouths, and you can’t always catch them before they do that and prevent it… Toxic fumes that still remain in the air and family members breathe them in…
And what about the dozens of children every year who come to the emergency rooms after they have come into contact with these substances, whether swallowing, pouring it on themselves, or spraying them and breathing in dangerous fumes?
5. Much Healthier for the Environment
The production of these detergents causes severe damage to people living near the factories. A good example of this in Israel is the Haifa Bay area. There is a lot of research done on the increased morbidity in people who live in the Haifa Bay area and what are the reasons for this. The conclusion is unequivocal: the chemical plants in the area, many of which are of various detergents, are the main culprit.
6. We Need to Protect Earth
The hole in the ozone that greatly harms the earth’s climate and our health was created by substances that were released into the atmosphere from various aerosols, most of them detergents.
The other substances reach the wastewater and kill our seas, poison the fish and slowly kill the planet.
Natural, green detergents made at home don’t harm the earth.
It’s true that the damage won’t be severe enough by the end of our lifetime, but what about our children? Grandchildren? We’ll leave them a dying planet.
